Germany rewrote the history books by becoming the
first European country to win the World Cup in South
American territory after successfully annexing Argentina to the World Cup crown, at the legendary Estadio
Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. A stadium that has a great
history and a mythical aura.
‘Die Mannschaft’ also became the second team, after
Italy to win a record of four World Cups. One could
argue, but simulataneously contend that Germany’s
victory was written in the stars. Throughout their entire
history, the Germans have always been known for their
physical and tactical prowess.
They had assembled a great crop of players that could
go toe-to-toe with the best on any given day. Almost
every player in the team was exceptional in their own
way. After coming so close at both the 2006 and 2010
showdowns, Germany’s moment of vindication finally
arrived in Brazil. After thrashing the hosts Brazil 7-1 in
the semis, they became the outright favourites after
dishing another tactical master class.
as he became the World Cup’s most prolific marksman.
surpassing Ronaldo’s record of 15 goals at a World
Cup. He also became the first player to score in four
successive World Cups. he is not your typical skillful
striker, but has an excellent eye for the goal. He has
certainly booked his name among the football greats
and as one of football’s most decorated strikers.
A few days after their World Cup triumph, Germany
were dealt with a huge blow after their talismatic captain, Phillip Lahm, announced his retirement from international football. Having made his debut 10 years ago,
Lahm went on to enjoy a stellar career with Germany
and featured in six major tournaments. His incredible
athleticism and exemplary professionalism were an
emblem of Germany’s success.
Joachim Loew’s brilliance can never go unnoticed.
Having served as an understudy in 2006 to Jürgen
Klinsman, Loew finally took it upon himself and built an
unbelievable competitive team. Having said that, the
big question now appears to be, can germany build on
their World Cup success to create a dynasty that will
dominate football?
However, the final was not won on a silver platter. It
proved to be a tight affair and was finally decided by a
sublime goal in extra time by the young Bayern Munich
sensation Mario Gotze, following some inventive piece
of artistry. Argentina tried their all but in the end it was
the German ‘Mean Machine’ that stood victorious.
What most teams can treasure from Germany’s
triumph is that individualism does not work in modern
football, but teamwork does. Lahm rivalled in the captaincy, Schweinsteiger was a force in the middle of the
park, and Muller was phenomenal in the attack, which
ultimately made Germany worth champions.
Miroslav Klose was also all smiles after the final whictle
