JUST GETTING STARTED

PHOTO: KEVIN COX
The racing season is in full swing and all of us at STREET / RACE Magazine couldn’ t be more ecstatic. From the long days at the track to the latenight meet ups, this is what we live for. We have already been to a few events since the start of the season and the amount of positive feedback and excitement that has come from the first issue of STREET / RACE Magazine has left us speechless. I cannot begin to describe the feeling I get when I see someone holding the magazine, read it from start to finish, and ask when the next one will be ready. Well, issue # 2 is here and all I can say is, we are just getting started.
If any of you have been following me since before I hopped on board with STREET / RACE Magazine you know I have been in the field of automotive photography for many years now, and I have come to notice a few things. Anyone can pick up a camera and snap a photo, but not everyone can capture the moments that tell pieces of a person’ s story. When I first started traveling with 1320Video and shooting events, I would just snap photos to get content without caring if there was a story behind it or not. I eventually came to realize there was much more to automotive photography than just releasing the shutter. A photograph is meant to capture the action, attitude, and candid moments that tell a story, and you will see nothing but that among the pages of this magazine.
You see a lot of photos of cars on the internet and in magazines, but you rarely see the faces of the very people who put so much time into their pride and joy. We understand the importance of a well-composed photograph of a car and how it will always make for a great photo spread, but it’ s not the only kind of image that we want in STREET / RACE Magazine. One of my personal favorite things to do is just walk around different events I attend and capture the moments that showcase what it means to be a car guy or girl, then personally talk to the owner and learn about their story and the car they put so much time and effort into. Every photograph I take I want to have some sort of story behind it. It could be a car on the dyno shooting flames in front of a huge crowd, a guy cruising down the highway in his 1,000-plus-horsepower street car in everyday traffic, a girl switching out a set of spark plugs in between rounds at the track or the faces of the driver and his friends when he wins the final race of the night. These are the kinds of photos we will be looking for as we sift through album after album.
Every car and every person has a story. We want to hear them and we want them on the pages of this magazine, on the website, Instagram and Facebook. Some people race because they like competition and being faster than the other guy. Some people race because they like the thrill of ripping down the street or drag strip. Some people race just for fun, and some race because it’ s what they live for. Some people love the late nights in the shop with friends, and some love just going to the track because that’ s where they consider their family to be. The more I dig deeper into the street car world, the more I am blown away on how supportive and amazing it really is.
If you see me at an event, no matter if you’ re a photographer, owner of a car, shop owner or anyone in general, I encourage you to come up and talk to me. If you don’ t catch me at an event, reach out to me at kevin @ streetracemag. com and tell me your story.
