Founded in 1974 by celebrated Southern ski resort developer Thomas Brigham , Snowshoe was originally designed and envisioned as a “ bare-bones ” recreational ski area with minimal lodging capacity . Snowshoe now boasts fourteen lifts spread out over three separate mountain faces . Each section of the resort has its own distinct advantages . “ One of the best things about Snowshoe Mountain Village is that it ’ s situated directly at the top of Cheat Mountain . If you ’ re staying in Snowshoe Village , you can ski directly down two of our three main areas without having to wait in a lift line for your first run . The ‘ Basin ’ and the ‘ Western Territory ’ areas are both located on different faces of Cheat Mountain , and the ‘ Silver Creek ’ area is located just down the road on the next hill over . Silver Creek is a perfect place for novice skiers and beginners to develop their skills . Trails like ‘ Greenhorn ’ and ‘ Cubb Run ’ are really wide and mellow . They ’ re terrific cruising trails .
