Parietal Picasso
Cave paintings, engraved rock art, petroglyphs, relief
sculpture all carved on cave walls, floors, ceilings,
or large blocks of stone — these are all classified as
‘parietal artwork’ which 39,000 years ago was one of
the first ways of recording stories and giving them a
sense of immortality. Stories were recorded through a
combination of symbols and shapes that were defined
by the location and community they were written in.
The images were often simple in their design and would
hold different meanings to different groups of people.
In my adaptation of parietal art, I took the story of
my family’s flee to Canada and plotted it onto a map.
Each dot represents somewhere they stayed overnight,
the larger the dot, the more time they spent in that
given location. The dashed line represents when they
left Europe for their ‘neue heimat’ (German for new
home), Canada.
