first year, around 50 cents per head per day. Going into March with the cows being off the beans, the ECM dropped to 107.97. However, the cows continued to stay positive throughout the summer.
“ Year over year, they were up. Do we attribute that to genetics? Do we attribute that to the forages? Do we attribute that to the ration makeup? It’ s probably all of the above. We know that it’ s not a single approach,” she said.
This year’ s approach differed as they had last year’ s crop of high oleic soybeans and their own roaster. After testing the beans, they noticed that last year’ s crop averaged 72.7 % in oleic acids and about 15.8 % in linoleic acids. Discussing as a team, Myer said it was decided to leave a small amount of the palm / calc salts rather than remove it completely as they had the year before. As of now, she said, a tenth of a pound each of palm and calcium are fed to the cows on top of the high oleic soybeans.
Myers said when ECM was tested in December 2025, the farm was at 108. Once back on the beans in January this year, that number jumped to 110, ending the month at 110.7.
While introducing high oleic soybeans has worked great for the dairy herd at Enchanted Dairy, Myers said there are many variables to consider, including what the input cost is versus the gain. She has worked with producers on both sides. Multiple farms have implemented it and it has worked great for them. Others have stayed neutral in that they reduced feed costs, but not enough to make the switch worthwhile. As to the cows at Enchanted Dairy, they’ ve adjusted well to the change in feed.
