16th-17th Centuries: Early colonists brought beer to the New World, where it was often considered safer to drink than water.
1830: Alcohol consumption reached a peak, with the average person consuming more than 7 gallons of alcohol annually.
1920-1933: The“ Noble Experiment” of Prohibition led to underground alcohol production( boot-legging), speakeasies, and a surge in organized crime.
The Medical Loophole: A surprising aspect of Prohibition was that doctors could still prescribe alcohol for medicinal purposes.
Minnesota 13 Moonshine: Farmers in Central Minnesota, especially Stearns County, produced a highly-sought-after illegal whiskey known as“ Minnesota 13”.
1933: The 21st Amendment repealed Prohibition, again allowing the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol.
1984: The national minimum drinking age was raised to 21.
2001: Spiritz Liquor opens and in 2007, Klaphake family purchases and has carved its niche in Central MN as a leading provider of whiskey, beer, wine and customer service.
