Agates:
Continued from page 41
After pitching the idea of starting Agate Farm to his friends on Facebook, Waagen said their support was encouraging. Besides finding natural glacier agates, Waagen said he has also found a number of fossils, impressions of clams and fossilized coral.
“ It’ s kind of exciting. You never know what you will find,” he said.
Agate Farm is open Friday through Sunday from 8 a. m. to dusk, from Easter until Halloween. Visitors can also schedule an agate-picking appointment with Waagen during the week by calling( 320) 360-0593. The farm is located at 9524 240th Street in Randall.
The cost to pick as many agates as a person wants is $ 5 per hour, with no charge for children ages 3 and under. While some people bring their own buckets or bags to collect agates, Waagen provides 5-gallon buckets and plastic bags. The farm is also dog-friendly, but visitors are asked to keep their dogs leashed at all times.
Besides agate picking, Waagen offers
a variety of activities tailored for children of all ages. Once children have picked a rock they would like to turn into their own pet rock, they are directed to first wash it at the nearby agate station before decorating it with googly eyes. There is also a photo props area with a spaceship cutout, a seating and viewing area, and a small on-site museum of finds, along with occasional merchandise and sticker giveaways.
What makes the field even more fun for agate hunting, especially during the late growing season, is that visitors walk through the planted crops, whether corn or soybeans. While soybeans are significantly closer to the ground, making them relatively easy to navigate, corn that is as tall as or taller than visitors can make it a fun and challenging outing at the same time. Of course, if someone gets lost in the cornfield, that person only has to walk until reaching the edge, then follow it around until returning to the starting point.
