Benton County 4-H‘ Gets Frosted’

BENTON COUNTY – Benton County 4-H held an engaging“ Get Frosted” Cake Challenge, giving youth the opportunity to build skills, try something new, and grow in confidence through hands-on learning.
We were fortunate to have two experienced decorators guiding the day. Paige Kebhart, who works in the bakery at Cub Foods in Buffalo, and Marissa Mox, who has decorating experience and will serve as a 4-H summer intern this year, both shared their decorating techniques and supported the youth as they worked through the challenge.
The day began with participants introducing themselves and sharing their decorating interests. They practiced filling icing bags and experimented with different decorating tips to build their comfort and skills before starting the challenge. This year’ s Benton County 4-H theme is“ Get Patriotic,” celebrating the United States’ 250th birthday. To align with this theme, the challenge cake featured a patriotic star created using various piping tips and detailed edging.
The youth carefully recreated the design, and those who completed it had the chance to try a more advanced version. After the challenge, they had time to decorate cupcakes for fun and creativity.
Throughout the day, participants developed more than just decorating skills. They practiced patience, problem-solving, perseverance, and creativity, encouraged each other, and learned to adapt when things didn’ t go as planned. As Shula LaDoux shared,“ It was easy enough that I did not get frustrated, but challenging enough to test my new skills. The instruction was clear. I had a
