WE’VE
MOVED!
BLACKS menswear opened in Stafford
in 1993, but Blacks was established as a
company in Newcastle under Lyme
some 188 years earlier. With the
Newcastle store moving several times
over the years to different locations
within the town, now enjoying a
commanding position in Pepper street,
with a large two storey shop.
In 1825 a tailoring business was established
on the first Black's site in the High Street,
Newcastle, where Clarks shoe shop is now.
The name came from James Lindsey Black
who traded under his name from the 1880s.
His son took over until the early 1940s, and
in 1949 it was bought by John and Gladys
Kirkham, and has remained in the family to
date.
It is one of Staffordshire's oldest businesses.
