Literary characters come
to ‘Life’ as pupils celebrate
WORLD BOOK DAY
n Thursday 6th March everyone’s
favourite literary characters came to life
as schools across the area celebrated
World Book Day.
Staff and students at St Dominic’s Priory
School in Stone were no exception as they threw
themselves into celebrating the 17th UNESCO
designated celebration of books. The day
recognises and commemorates all things
literary, from authors and illustrators to the act
of reading itself, celebrating the magic of the
written word and helping to encourage children
to get interested in books and the pleasure that
can come from reading.
Competition was fierce at the Stone school
in the fancy-dress competition as all the
children made a huge effort in creating their
outfits. The Prep. Department chose a Roald
Dahl theme which produced some very
convincing representations of the BFG, Matilda,
the Witches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
and Fantastic Mr Fox.
Olivia Brosnan and Grace Shelly won the
Key Stage 1 and 2 bookmark design
competitions. The senior girl’s characters
ranged from 101 Dalmatians, Alice in
Wonderland, Snow White, Little Red Riding

encyclopedia.
Sophie Roberts in Year 8 won the overall
competition with her fantastic Mad Hatter
costume.
Throughout the day pupils could be seen
reading certificates placed on classroom doors
by members of staff which explained why their
favourite book was important to them.
