Stomping out Sediment in the Burdekin Final Report | Página 22

o 10km of permanent electric fencing ; o 5 water tanks ; o 11km of piping ; and o 15 troughs ;
• the construction of earthworks and other interventions such as diversion banks , water spreading banks and whoa-boys , reshaping of gully features , sub-catchment ripping and reseeding , and construction of porous check dams ( PCDs ); and
• full remediation of some features , such as the construction of three rock chutes , reshaping , capping and soil amelioration of severely eroded sites such as the alluvial gully site at Strathalbyn , and the gully complex at Johnnycake .
In addition to Gully and Streambank Toolbox sediment savings reported , each site had sediment savings identified through the Paddock to Reef Integrated Monitoring , Modelling and Reporting Program ( Paddock to Reef ) grazing projector tool from catchment level and grazing management practice change - reportable to the P2R program . Sediment savings modelled through the program were :
• Tabletop 20.0 ,
• Strathalbyn 2.1 ;
• Terry Creek 1.7 ;
• 5 Mile 0.5 ;
• Glenalpine 40.5 ;
• Sutherland 19.9 ;
• Hellsgate-Desmond 16.6 ; and
• Johnnycake 0 .
These sediment savings were incorporated into Hillslope Total Suspended Solids ( TSS ) savings parameters for each project .
Fine sediment savings were recalculated using final project delivery details , the P2R grazing projector tool calculations and updated source catchment delivery ratios . The final total sediment savings for the project was 1,886 tonnes per annum .
A significant component of the project was an extension , engagement and training program aimed at encouraging greater adoption of improved grazing and erosion management practices by graziers . An initial group of neighbours , previous project participants , the Bowen Holistic Management group and the project ’ s grazier mentors , expressed enthusiasm for continued involvement in the project ’ s progress and lessons learn . Sixteen training and extension activities were delivered and many of this group attended multiple activities in the five years of the project .
Holistic Management educators Brian Wehlburg ( Inside Outside Management ) and Dick Richardson ( Grazing Naturally ) were the principal extension deliverers . Support was provided by Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries officers Bob Shepherd ( Charters Towers ), Jim Fletcher ( Mackay ) and Paul Jones ( Emerald ), and Raymond Stacey ( Resource Consulting Services ). 22
