Visit Govan Old Parish Church to discover their unique collection of early medieval carved stones, which date from the 9th – 11th centuries and commemorate the power of those who ruled the Kingdom of Strathclyde. Visit the fabulous Fairfield Heritage Centre and discover the story of Glasgow and the world’s greatest ever shipyard. The Grade A listed Fairfield Shipbuilding offices on Govan Road have now been restored in a £5.8 million project that provides a wonderful new heritage centre and contemporary office accommodation for design and digital technology companies. The heritage centre tells the story of shipbuilding on the Clyde over the last 150 years and Fairfield’s illustrious role within this as the “most notable private shipbuilding concern in the world”. It is a truly fabulous visit and best of all its FREE. Open Monday- Friday 1 pm-4 pm (Saturday in July & August only). From June and through the summer you can use the Govan Ferry to cross from Govan to the Riverside Museum and Partick. The free shuttle service runs every day 8 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday and 9.45 am to 5.30 pm on Saturday and Sundays. The ferry departs from the pontoon at the bottom of Water Row and shuttles backwards and forwards continually throughout the day. The ferry can carry more than twenty people per trip, so shorter queues folks, and two different types of vessel are on hand to cater for people with different mobility needs. The ferry can also carry bikes, so if you are the next Bradley Wiggins simply grab your wheels and get ready to sail. Also phone to double check the ferry is continuing to run in the month of September. The Govan Summer Ferry operates each year thanks to the efforts of Govan Workspace Ltd and funding donations from a large number of local organisations. They are aiming to raise additional funds to keep the ferry sailing until Doors Open Day weekend at the end of September. Discover Govan’s ancient history and take in lunch at the wonderful Cafe 13 and enjoy a stroll around Elder Park. Make a day of it by popping over to the Riverside Museum and the Tall Ship.
