Joyce McHaffie 13/05/1932 – 25/05/2016 Born on Friday the 13 th May 1932, Joyce Eileen Gertrude Poston was an only child. She grew up in Croftend Avenue and attended St Oswalds all her life. A pupil of Croftfoot Primary and Kings Park Secondary Schools, she left aged 18 years. Joyce could have gone on to Art School but, as her father was restricted to a wheelchair, she needed to work and became a counter clerk at The Trustee Savings Bank. The McHaffie’s lived at 328 Kingsacre Road and both families attended St Oswald’s Episcopal Church where Bill & Joyce first met. Joyce recalled how Bill “assumed he was my boyfriend” and that he would walk home beside her from functions. After Bill completed his National Service, they were married on 12 December 1955 at St Oswald’s and set up the marital home in 207 Kingsheath Avenue where Joyce was to live for a further 60 years. She loved her garden and also enjoyed long friendships with many great neighbours. In 1957 Morag was born and, three years later, Neil completed the family. Family hoidays featured prominently on the McHaffie calendar with Dungiven in Northern ireland and the Norfolk Broads being Joyce’s favourite spots. Morag and Neil recollect that their Mum would pack for every eventuality and that, consequently, they used to set off heavily burdened with an excessive amount of baggage! In their later years, Joyce and Bill s t i l l enjoyed t h e i r holidays, day trips, coach trips, trips abroad and - on their 40 th anniversary – a Mediterranean cruise. Morag and Neil both trained as teachers, although Morag never taught and now works with The Care Inspectorate. StOM Page 12
