He was paired with a German writer who had written a book on the re-appearance of Adolf Hitler in our times. We were told that Beard had a similar story to tell about how our times would deal with the miracle of the resurrection. Not quite, the novel’s place is Jerusalem, a city enclosed by a wall and under Roman occupation. The characters involved are those known in the Bible. But here enters a 007 figure called Gallio, the speculator, a secret agent of the imperial Gestapo. He ‘does counter- insurgency’, a charismatic cult-leader is dead, and Gallio oversaw that man’s execution. The theft of the body he was supposed to be guarding would ruin his career. StOM Page 9
