where men and women from East
and West, catholic and protestant,
go on a pilgrimage together on the
‘Luther Way’ in Saxony, from
Eisleben to Wittenberg, towns
associated with Martin Luther. They
walk for ecumenical reasons, which
Luther would have approved of. For
them, Luther is not the person who
split the Church but wanted to reform
it.
It is self-understood that this
undertaking has a spiritual
programme: they pause for silence
on cross roads, they have Bible
readings and discussions, they want
to learn from each other and
recognise the qualities of their fellow
pilgrims.
And thinking about the Bible words is
part of the reason for the periods of
silence. To be silent during the walk,
in the rhythm of the steps, is a way
of recreation, it contributes to mental
and physical health – a pilgrimage
as it should be.
