140 th Anniversary Celebrations of The Salvation Army
You may or may not be aware that on 24 March 1879, The Salvation Army
‘opened fire’ on the city of Glasgow. The first meeting was held in the
Victoria Music Hall on Argyle St, Anderston. 140 years later, The Salvation
Army is still fighting the battles of poverty, injustice and inequality that
underpin and fuel our vision of bringing the Kingdom of God to our world.
Although the beautiful three-year-old building that we now occupy is
somewhat different to many of its previous guises, the desire to bring the
gospel to all is the same today as it always has been. Our current means of
‘doing’ our faith has many forms, from the Beacon Cafe that is open
Monday-Friday, to our Toddler program on a Wednesday morning; from our
cell groups that meet at different points and locations to our Sunday
services; from our Kids club - God’s Groovy Gang - on Wednesday
evenings, to our Street Team on Saturdays serving meals to up to sixty
individuals every other week.
Our desire is that when people encounter the name of The Salvation Army
by those involved with the ministry and mission here at Glasgow City Centre,
there is recognition of the Kingdom of God at work and that his presence
might be given the opportunity to enrich and change lives for the better.
Clearly to continue this work requires the support of The Salvation Army at
large, but also from the generosity of the public, for which we are truly
grateful. Over the years, there have been many times when this support has
been particularly evidenced, our current building perhaps being the most
obvious and current example.
Over the weekend of the 22, 23 and 24 March, we are celebrating the 140
years of continued work in this community, but also Glasgow and indeed
Scotland, as Anderston saw the first opening of The Salvation Army in
Scotland. We would like to pay tribute to the years of hard work, the support
from the community and also look to what the future may hold.
