Glasgow Garden Festival
How can thirty years have passed since
we spent five months by the Clyde in the
heart of Glasgow in some of the best
weather in a long time (or maybe that is
just the rose-tinted glasses).
Recently the television programmes took
us a walk down memory lane in picture
and song reflecting on the enjoyment
that Glaswegians and folks from around
the globe had had on that barn piece of
land, that used to be thriving dockland,
now swathed in blooms.
As a member of Glasgow Youth Choir and the Agnes Hoey Singers we
performed for their Royal Highnesses at the opening ceremony and on a
number of occasions gave concerts in the bandstand or other locations
across the site.
As a teacher at Shawlands Academy
my brother and pupils sailed their
single skull boats in the basin on
many an evening, as the sun set over
the city.
How sad we all were when the
Garden Festival’s life was
extinguished, and the public took little
souvenirs home with them. Nature
reclaimed the land and for many
years it was a wasteland once more.
In the last few years, life has
been restored with modern
glass buildings, housing the
BBC and STV, Science
Centre and Hotels but only a
small tree lined area called
Festival Park serves as a
reminder of the Garden
Festival.
Please share your memories
of the Garden Festival or visiting Bellahouston Park for our double edition
July and August, in time for the print deadline of Sunday 17 June 2018.
