Even Emily Davidson who died beneath the hooves of the King’s horse at
the 1913 Epsom Derby and whose heroic sacrifice drew more attention to
her cause, might have been more a victim of circumstance than of principle
as suggested by the presence of the return ticket found in her handbag.
Similarly, the militant Dundee suffragists who left four postmen severely
injured by phosphorus chemicals left in pillar boxes.
None of the incidents recalled above in anyway diminish the validity of the
Suffragettes’ cause, nor the shame that it should have been necessary in the
first place.
The point is that we tend to remember what we choose to remember and
obliterate anything that might be regarded (in possibly Al Gore’s most/only
memorable phrase) as “an inconvenient truth”.
