Behind the Name
Every month, StOM prints the Anglican Calendar of Prayer, but have you
ever thought about what or who lies behind the name and place specified
every Sunday?
In each issue, we will feature some information about some of the
people/places for whom your prayers are being asked.
While our colonial history in the Indian
Sub-Continent should be a source of
shame rather than pride, there can be no
denying the influence of the Raj and,
particularly, of its Scottish element.
Within the diocese overseen by
Moderator Prem Chand Singh lies the
Scottish Church College, Kolkata.
Indeed, even his title suggests a throw back to a
Caledonian link and listed amongst his advocates is
the Honorary Treasurer, one Robert Bruce!
Born on December 12, 1962, he was ordained
Deacon in the Diocese of Jabalpur in 1988, and as
the presbyter in 1990. He was elected Bishop of the
Diocese of Jabalpur in 2004. Since then he has been
giving leadership to the Diocese. Under his dynamic
leadership the Diocese of Jabalpur has grown in all
spheres of witnessing.
Academically he has to his credit, BA, MA, Bachelor
of Divinity, Doctor of Divinity from Christian Education, USA.
A dynamic personality and a multifaceted leader, Moderator Singh is
presently the President, National Council of Churches in India. He is the Vice
President, Bible Society of India, President, Madhya Pradesh Christian
Council (M P C C), Executive Member of Christian Conference of Asia
(CCA), President of All India Sunday School Association (AISSA). Also
holding many more positions for the upliftment of Ecumenical organizations.
He is married to Nora and has two children Piyush and Priyanka.
His vision is identical with the vision of Church of Northern India – Unity,
Witness and Service. He states that “Our priority will be the marginalized
and the less privileged. We will open new avenues in making contribution in
the ecumenical world. My leadership will continue to be “Servant
Leadership” which was shown to us as a model by our Lord Jesus Christ.
Finally, my faith affirmation is like that of Paul”. “I can do all things through
Him who strengthens me”.
