Kewl Kat Spotlight
Here’s To The Life & Times of RoyBoy,
The “Elder Statesman”
We were fortunate enough to get a
moment of RoyBoy’s time between
surfing, helping out a friend and
tending to family to get his story:
SJ: Thank you, RoyBoy, for taking
time out of your day to chat with us
for this Kewl Kat Spotlight.
RB: Well thank you for choosing me.
SJ: So we hear you’re retired. Do
you mind sharing with our readers
how young you are?
RB: I am 70 years young.
SJ: You look great for being that
young and you’re still surfing?
RB: As much as I can. I love my
surfing!
SJ: What did you do for work?
RB: Landscaping, carpentry –
anything construction. I am a
contractor by trade. Construction
allowed me hours in the day to rush
home and grab my board to get in
the water for some surf! I’ve been
surfing since the early longboard
era, yeah the 60s mainstream is
when I started. Remember the
Gidget movies? Oh wait, you’re not
even old enough to remember, are
you? That’s my era...(chuckles)
SJ: Cool! Do you have a group of peeps
you surf with or hang out with?
RB: I do know a lot of great people I
usually surf with! Quite good friends,
Zane Walker & Fireman Mike are a few.
It’s very gratifying for me to know a lot of
people in the water and out. I have been
around here for about the past 55 years
and I love saying hello to all the people!
SJ: Do you have a memorable surf
moment? What’s your favorite surf spot?
RB: My favorite surf spot is 38th, Inside
Pleasure is really what it’s called. I don’t
know why the names got changed. My
memorable surf moment was when I was
surfing out at Cowells one early summer
morning at 1st point. I was the only one in
the water. I got up on a wave and as soon
as I stood up, 2 dolphins jumped in on the
wave beside me. I turned and noticed
another behind me. They were riding the
wave with me and I was the only one in
the water! That was the coolest thing
ever!
SJ: Wow, that is frickin’ awesome!
RB: It was! I am a huge beach advocate.
My biggest pet peeve is litter and
pollution at the beach and in the water. I
love animals and ocean life. If I see a stick
in the water or trash, I’ll grab it. It’s a big
issue for me.
SJ: Totally understand that! That’s great!
We’re the same way! So what else do
you do for fun or hobbies?
RB: I am in to horses. Any horse activities
like trail riding, team penning. I love the
Sierras.
SJ: Team penning?
RB: Yeah. I participated in team penning
while at a hobby ranch. I really enjoyed it.
Team penning is about moving cattle into
different pens for different purposes such
as branding, transferring and other stuff.
