Kangara Waters Winter

When the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown isolated them , residents of Kangara Waters needed a distraction , so Margaret Erickson and two friends challenged them to make 100 scarves to give to those less fortunate . In three months they made 150 , then moved on to knit beanies . They decided to have a sale and donate all the proceeds to charity , as well as any items that didn ’ t sell . $ 1,400 was raised and divided between The Early Morning Centre , St Vinnies , and Children ’ s Ground in Alice Springs .
In 2021 they have continued knitting scarves , beanies , gloves and more . A range of local groups have contributed scarves , TV socks , mittens , gloves , jumpers , wraps , fleecy rugs and more .
This year ’ s sale is coming up . They are hoping to raise a bit more , as new members of the community join in . It will be held on Saturday 5 June from 8.30AM - 12.30PM , adjacent to the Birrigai Café located in the retirement village .
To make the day extra special they have ‘ yarn bombed ’ some trees near the café , wrapping it in knitting which will later be made into pet rugs for the RSPCA .
Margaret recently approached the Canberra Weekly and suggested they might be interested in a good new story . It has been published and can be read at https :// canberraweekly . com . au / purls-of-wisdom-knittingfor-a-cause /
