Remembering David
Some readers will have known Rev David Webster who died on 6 July
at the age of 95. A family notice in the Canberra Times tells us that
David had a long and fulfilling life, in which he achieved much and influenced
many. He was a kind and thoughtful man, a believer in God and
humanity and a great teacher.
I first met David many years ago through a Presbytery committee and
agree that he was a kind man and great teacher. He taught me much.
Robyn and I again connected with David during our years worshipping
at Canberra City Church, where he was a member and often preached.
In recent times we connected with David again as he attended the
monthly Holy Communion services conducted by Chris Lockley in the
Goodwin Ainslie Chapel. It was good to have him there and at the conversations
over coffee that follow those services. We missed and
remembered him when we resumed those Holy communion events on
19 July.

Be Happy
Writing in the April 2020 issue of The Oldie (a British publication - see
http://www.theoldie.co.uk/magazine), Lucy Deedes says Don’t be
grumpy, be happy. She writes that, as we get older, it’s easy to whinge
and scowl: much better to avoid confrontation and, smile and accept
life's little letdowns.
Elaborating on her arguments, Deedes says that, if we are sensationally
offended and feel a strong letter coming on, we should stop, stand
away from the laptop and resist the lure of Twitter. Then sleep on it,
mow the lawn, go for a run or d some strenuous housework before writing.
Or, better still, don’t write at all because doing so would foster the
negative feelings and prolong the argument. She recommends going to
see the offending party or trying a dignified silence.
