Artist of the Year

On 1 December , Julie Bradley was named as ACT Artist of the Year for 2020 . Congratulations Julie !
She was named Artist of the Year by the Canberra Critics Circle judging panel ( of which Brian Rope is a member ). The Award was presented by Ian Meikle of Canberra City News ( which sponsors the Award ) before a substantial ( but smaller than usual because of COVID restrictions ) crowd of critics , artists and arts administrators ( plus husband Kevin ) at the Canberra Museum and Gallery . All enthusiastically applauded her .
Julie is a well-respected and established artist , who has a distinguished 35-year career in the visual arts profession . She is a role model and mentor to many others . She works from her studio at ANCA and her work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia , the Australian National University , Canberra Museum and Gallery , the University of Canberra Collection , Bundanon Trust and the Lu Rees Archive . She has won numerous awards and exhibits her work in both solo and group exhibition across Australia .
Julie was singled out by the judging panel for her remarkable year , in which she undertook a residency in Ireland then returned to mount a huge exhibition , Evocation , at Belconnen Arts Centre ( because plans for it to be in Melbourne were scuttled by you know what ). The paintings In that exhibition used gouache washes on collaged Japanese papers to convey the emotional effects of place and weather . It was almost a sell-out .
Julie received a framed certificate and $ 1000 from Canberra City News , and craft critic Meredith Hinchliffe presented her with a set of finely-crafted , stainless-steel spoons by Canberra artist Alison Jackson .
