“ The fabric of Westwood is truly tied into that neighborhood ,” Graalman said , during the board meeting . At the time , Westwood Principal Darren Nelson and the neighborhood itself also felt the school should remain where it was . her parents in 1955 .
“ Now many kids ( are ) walking to school , ( but ) prior to Westwood Elementary School being built , I would venture to say we saw virtually none ,” Mark Lambert said .
Mission accomplished
Ingham Park in the Westwood neighborhood is active tonight . A white tent and tables are set up , where people are enjoying chicken , fries and Sno cones . The sun shines through the trees , the adults catch up and the whoops of happy kids playing in bounce houses fills the air . Graalman is pleased with the turnout . “ I can ’ t really think of a movement that has brought together the university , the community and the public school system in one swoop that actually affects how you feel about the community ,” Graalman said . “... ( There ’ s ) a rich mixture of people .”
A lot of people have called the four couples , asking how they built the neighborhood . Between the Lamberts , Graalmans , Beckstroms and Clarks , they have each served as president of the WNA at different times .
The four couples continue to contribute to the health and growth of their neighborhood , and along with other residents , have donated money for street sign toppers , as well as a sculpture that sits at the corner of South Western Rd . and West Sixth Ave .
“ There ’ s a rich mixture of people ,” said Julie Lambert , WNA treasurer . “... The beauty of the neighborhood is that there are a lot of houses that are gems … it ’ s a safe little neighborhood . I see that as mission accomplished .” SwOk
