Payne County Commissioner District 3

Rhonda Markum

Rhonda Markum was elected to the Board of County Commissioners District 3 by voters in Payne County and took office in January 2023 .
Though Markum has been a Stillwater resident since January 1985 , she is the first woman road district commissioner of Payne County .
Markum talked about her role as County Commissioner and how she believes people in government help in their communities .
“ As a woman in road maintenance , I ’ d like to think that I am helping people . Not just through what I do , but by showing people , young women , and men , that any position of government leadership allows you to have a fulfilling career of being a public servant , and helping those you can ,” Markum said .
“ Most people know the county commission office for is roads . If you live in the rural part of the County , you know who your commissioner is . With more building going on out in the rural parts of the County , the County tries its best to keep the roads safe for the public ,” Markum said .
In the almost four decades that she ’ s lived here , she cites the building of shopping malls , more businesses coming to the area , the growth of the schools systems and housing subdivisions as examples of the area ’ s progress .
However , Markum believes progress in is happening here in more ways than one . And in regards to more women filling leadership roles in government and other sectors , she said , it is occurring all the time now and is a hallmark of a healthy community and she sees women leaders as making a difference .
“ They bring a new perspective in those roles ,” she said . “ It also helps gender equality by removing barriers to the female workforce by opening up the idea of more women in leadership .”
She said she believes that anyone who has a dream to do something , if they put in the hard work , they can do it .
“ I was told that Payne County wasn ’ t ready for a woman commissioner in road maintenance ,” she said . “ I worked for the county seven and half years under two different commissioners before I made the decision to run . From all of the jobs that I have worked , they all helped to prepare me for this job today .”
Markum said she will continue her diligent work for the taxpayers .
