The possibilities are endless
It isn’ t really distance that makes the heart grow fonder. That’ s not quite right. It’ s anticipation. When we are able to imagine limitless possibilities, we are at our purest optimistic selves. Finishing a football season without a win in conference? Doesn’ t really matter. We could do anything this season. Not only can we be better than expected, there is nothing off the table. We don’ t know what we can achieve because we don’ t know the barriers. Nothing is for certain, so anything is possible.
Ancient traditions would have you believe spring is the impetus for rebirth and renewal. Not so. Not for us. No, it’ s the fall. Here, our chance for new life begins as the summer ends. Whether it’ s optimism or a refusal to give in, we do not hedge our expectations.
Sometimes, to win in the long run, you have to roll with the punches. To people not familiar with boxing, it basically means you know you’ re going to get hit so you do your best to make sure your opponents only get a glancing blow.
That’ s a pretty good representation of how many of us try to look at our futures. It’ s not unlike Larry Reece, who was gracious enough to tell us about his journey as a cancer survivor. And, how about Josh Ford? Even with a legacy of football hanging over him, it would be hard to believe the Stillwater product could have seen himself in a leadership position as a sophomore.
There’ s a very large photo of T. Boone Pickens at his new legacy museum in his namesake stadium. It’ s kind of odd for a portrait. He appears to be smirking more than smiling. He was photographed by Forbes not long after a stroke and some of his face suffered from paralysis. A lot of people in his inner circle probably would have preferred a different photo. He loved it. He believed it captured his personality. Pickens was a realist and an optimist. Those ideologies can coexist. We’ re eager for the fall, but if it doesn’ t shape out to be what we expected, we can deal with that, too.
