“ What I’ ve discovered is, we had to do a little nudging sometimes to get those students across the street,” Morris said, because they feel so at home at NOC.
Administrators do all they can to help students, including having students fill out a“ needs assessment” survey early on to direct students to resources such as Pete’ s Pantry, Our Daily Bread or Wings of Hope, offering help with federal student aid applications and more.
Howard even put together a flyer to place around the building with information about resources and events on campus, and additionally, he’ s helped
pair NOC faculty with students to attend events and programs on the OSU campus, gradually allowing students to adjust.
NOC students also have the opportunity to apply for scholarship programs, including the Global Education Program scholarship that allows them to take study abroad trips. During Game Days, students sell parking spots or offer golf cart rides to Boone Pickens Stadium visitors to raise money for study abroad trips.
About 10 years ago, NOC leadership began developing“ 1-plus-3” agreements with various colleges at OSU as a way to allow students to start college faster. With help at the state level, NOC also works with students coming from Meridian Technology Center, particularly with students needing an associates degree to get into OSU. For Pickering, NOC was definitely“ life changing.” She’ s been accepted into the Wy’ east Medicine postbaccalaureate pathway program, a 10-month program partnered with Oregon Health and Science University that helps Native American students who are passionate about medicine.
“ The NOC Gateway program is amazing for those who want to attend OSU but have reservations for any reason,” Pickering said.“ While the program was started to help those who do not meet the academic requirements for OSU, many students I have met who utilize the NOC Gateway program simply want to feel more comfortable before moving to a larger school.”
