A school place for every child who needs one
School-building in Croydon continues to be big
news as the council keeps up its commitment to provide
a place for every child who needs one.
The borough’s steady increase in the number of
school-age children is unmatched anywhere in the UK –
a fact that has been recognised by the government,
and which has seen the council receive a bigger cash
grant than any other authority.
In 2013 alone, Croydon has been awarded £110m
towards its £170m school-construction programme.
As a result, by September 2014, Croydon will have
a new primary school opening in Haling Road and will
have seen the permanent expansion of four other
primary schools.
Others in the pipeline include Aberdeen Road,
Katharine Street and Westways, and the consultation in
relation to the proposed expansion of West Thornton, in
Canterbury Road, should be completed shortly.
Between 2013 and 2015 an additional 5,220
permanent primary places will be provided. There is also
a programme of increasing the number of fixed-term
temporary pupil places across the borough.
In the same timeframe, 117 primary and 296 secondary
places will be provided for pupils with special
educational needs.
As a result of this development programme, the
borough will be able to continue meeting the everincreasing demand from its growing population – and this
year every parent who applied on time for a place for
their child received an offer of a suitable school.
Coupled with continuing year-on-year
improvements in GCSE results, this means the borough’s
pupils have every possible chance of meeting their full
potential.
