STEP CHANGE FOR SAFETY GLOBAL SHARING DEC 2013 - SAFE NAVIGATION | Page 10

GLOBAL SHARING MONTHLY NEWSLETTER – DEC. 2013 - NAVIGATION KEY MESSAGE: REMAIN VIGILANT, EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED & TAKE EARLY ACTIONS. WHAT HAPPENED: A vessel was navigating under pilotage, in dense fog with visibility less than 1 nautical mile when she encountered a close quarter situation. A small coastal tanker was contacted by the pilot and it was agreed that they would pass starboard to starboard. The coaster however failed to keep her heading and eventually altered towards the vessel. The pilot contacted the coaster to no avail; the Master immediately intervened and took corrective action due to the visibility. Once the coastal tanker was abeam and the risk of collision was mitigated the vessel returned to her charted course without further incident WHY IT HAPPENED: The incident serves as a timely reminder to always be vigilant during pilotage, do not hesitate to intervene should it be required to ensure the safe passage of your vessel LESSONS LEARNED: The Master showed good leadership and correctly put the safety of the vessel first REMARKS: SITUATIONS ST 31 DEC 2013 RULES OF THE ROAD – RULE 19 FOR REDUCED VISIBILITY A Shell Marine Contractors Safety Initiative
