One of the BEST ways to engage your students is through
something that is unique and maybe even feels a little
bit...dangerous. Graffiti and Street Art are a terrific example
of this. It feels like you're pushing the envelope, but really,
graffiti walls in the classroom can be a wonderful way to
integrate the arts with other content areas.
Some tips for using this visual art medium:
1. Use materials you have on hand.
Try creating your wall out of black bulletin board paper and hang it on the walls of your classroom. Then,
use a silver sharpie to graffiti. Or, if you'd prefer to have more color, use white bulletin board or butcher
block paper instead.
2. Treat the board like a work of art.
Because it is! This isn't just for documentation. It's truly a canvas for ideas. Be sure to introduce it this way
for best results.
3. Have a purpose before you begin.
Be clear in how you want to use your graffiti wall. Is it for reference? To communicate or synthesize an
idea? As a springboard for further investigation? Be sure to let your students know up front what the wall
is for and how you'll be using it.
