There were some students who were anxious to get back to “ regular art class ” rather than learning about science during art . This is strong evidence in support of “ art for art ’ s sake .” It is important to note that integration shouldn ’ t be happening in the art classroom alone . True integration requires a balanced emphasis on a variety of disciplines , with equally rigorous educational activities and multiple assessments . The challenge of STEAM is to advocate truly cross-curricular learning rather than simply adding in some art projects . The real world isn ’ t segregated by discipline in the way that the school curriculum is . Outside of the school building , art and design are thoroughly integrated with all parts of life . By designing units that emphasize whole-brain learning and real-world situations with artistic processes rather than products , teachers can stimulate meaningful creative expression and promote the value of the arts in education .
