Somersport Park: Somerset’ s spot to get fit

Story and photos by Bob Flynn
Somerset residents are blessed to have access to a large selection of local parks located throughout the community thanks to the efforts of the City of Somerset Parks & Recreation staff.
Within the park system, visitors can find features for everyone including playgrounds, some equipped with sensory equipment, walking and running tracks, basketball courts, shelters and sports fields.
As the parks were added over the years, the locations for the parks were strategically chosen to make them convenient and accessible to the nearby neighborhoods to provide recreational activities to the greatest number of children possible.
According to the city, the services at the parks were intimately geared toward the needs and preferences of the people within those communities.
The largest of those parks is the 17-acre Somersport Park located at 300 Pumphouse Rd, just off of East Ky. 80.
The Somersport Park sports complex is home to the city’ s youth soccer leagues and features a newly installed turf-playing surface on each of the two soccer fields and also houses a youth football field.
Somersport also features the Fischer Fun Park, a playground unique within the park system that is designed to meet the needs of children who for one circumstance or another cannot access and use the other playgrounds in the area.
Fisher Fun Park is an inclusive playground, which includes ramps and a rocking boat for children in wheelchairs.
It also includes sensory equipment for those with special needs, including devices to make musical sounds and animal noises.
