For nature lovers who might want to take advantage of those final summer days , Wayne County is home to various Appalachian trails amongst waterfalls , swinging bridges and springs .
As you explore these areas you might even find one of the commission ’ s hidden decorative floats , which are placed in scenic Wayne County locations and can only be found through deciphering cryptic hints shared on their social media within their “ Finder ’ s Keepers ” tourist project .
“ It ’ s just a great little treasure hunt for folks to explore the area ,” said Rice . “ We are excited about these key natural features in Wayne County , and we are working as a commission to even be able to put some interactive waypoints , maps and materials to folks in the future to create a better experience in those places ,” said Rice .
Monticello is also eager to feature their small businesses and local farmers during this month ’ s Monticello Market , Downtown event on August 6 from 10 a . m . to 3 . p . m .
“ The theme for August will be pretty cool ,” said Rice . “ We ’ re doing a farm machinery show and petting zoo that month , and we ’ ll be able to let our local folks showcase what they have in those agricultural spaces .”
Monticello Market , Downtown will include their local farmers market , unique vendors from boutiques , woodworking and more , as well as food trucks , ice cream and snacks .
Around the downtown area and beyond passersby can also take part in the “ Giant Chair Challenge ” across the county . You can ’ t miss the sight of one of Monticello ’ s giant chairs uniquely painted and placed in front of the town ’ s favorite restaurants , shops and businesses .
The first chair was built by the Wayne County High School carpentry class , painted by local artist Prestley Sutton , and it was placed at the Best Western Hotel .
