27 , is a northern Kentucky native himself , from Kenton County , and has long been familiar with the Gold Star tradition .
“ It reminds me of home ,” said Hornback , the franchise location ’ s third owner . “ I ate a lot of chili when I lived there . Cincinnati chili is unique and there isn ’ t any other chili like it . Once you eat it and eat it pretty regularly , you have to have it all the time .”
According to Hornback , the original franchise owner was also from up north and well familiar with that style of chili . The Gold Star company primarily serves the Ohio , Kentucky and Indiana areas .
While Gold Star is a popular meal stop throughout the year , business undoubtedly picks up during the summer when the Ohio Navy converges upon the community .
“ We have the highest sales in the summertime , and a lot of it has to do with the Ohio Navy coming into town and being extremely loyal to Cincinnati chili ,” Hornback said .
One of Gold Star ’ s most popular dishes is the 3-Way , spaghetti smothered in Cincinnati-style chili and a special blend of shredded Wisconsin cheddar .
