hole golf course and a 102-site campground on an island . The park was named for the sideburnwhiskered Civil War general Ambrose Burnside . Burnside led patrols along the Cumberland River , circling this 400-acre island while on the lookout for Confederate soldiers .
Blevins is especially proud of the park ’ s 18-hole championship golf course , which was completely renovated and is surrounded by beautiful Lake Cumberland . Brian Ault , designer of Dale Hollow Lake and Hidden Cove , designed this spectacular waterfront layout .
At 6,394 yards , the course features Zoysia fairways , bent grass tees and greens . The
natural beauty of large boulders highlighting the landscape at hole 6 will set you up for a beautiful view atop the back tee . In 2009 this state park golf course received the first place Commonwealth Journal Readers Choice Award as the “ Best Places To Play Golf .” General Burnside Island State Park golf course was recognized in Kentucky Living magazine ’ s 2016 Reader ’ s Choice Awards Hall of Fame .
“ The golf course had some awards over the years , recently receiving once again the Kentucky Living Hall of Fame Best Public Golf Course in the State of Kentucky ,” Blevins stated . “ The golf course was award by Golf Advisor , as one of the top maintained golf courses .”
Cool lake breezes and beautiful views make camping at General Burnside a great getaway . The campground features 100 sites with utility hookups , two central service buildings with showers and rest rooms , and a dump station . A hiking trail is also available at the local state park .
“ Being a local state park , we just want to be a place for tourism , a place for our local community to come and enjoy the park ,” Blevins stated . “ The park is paid for with local tax-payer money and we appreciate that . We have an award-winning golf course , we ’ ve been improving the
