This summer , you could go to the beach in Florida , or maybe a Disney park . You could go see the Grand Canyon or play the slots in Vegas . You could do a lot of things that cost a lot of money and zap a lot of your time just trying to get there .
Or , alternately , you could stay right here in Pulaski County and play all summer long .
Here in central Kentucky , we ’ re blessed with a bounty of both gorgeous natural resources , from the waters of Lake Cumberland to the sylvan wonder of the Daniel Boone National Forest , to man-made wonders and activities galore .
In this magazine , the first of two “ Stay & Play ” guides to local fun that the Commonwealth Journal will publish this summer , we take a look at Master Musicians festival , now in its 30th year and still bringing in big-name musical acts to Pulaski County — this year , country superstar Wynonna Judd is the headliner .
We visit SomerSplash , the community ’ s water park which is always packed when the sun is out and water slides look awfully tempting . We also go downtown , where the Lake Cumberland Farmers Market provides a chance to get the freshest ingredients right from the source , and hop next door to the Charred Oak Whiskey Grill , which , along with sister restaurant Guthrie ’ s Grill in Burnside , provides Pulaski with some of the most delicious dishes in the Lake Cumberland region — along with Reno ’ s Roadhouse , another must-visit Burnside location with great steaks , chicken , fish and more .
We take a trip over to Lake Cumberland Resort III , a hidden gem for those who wish to stay near the lake and enjoy spectacular views in out-of-the-way lodging . And we put a spotlight on some other local businesses that provide things everyone needs to make their summer better , from new looks at the Pink Bee to libations from Liquor Emporium and even a place to flop from Kemper Furniture , if you just want to be comfortable and stay home this summer — literally .
So before you gas up the tank , book reservations online for some hotel you ’ ve never set foot in before , and pack your suitcase , consider this idea — just stay and play , right here in Pulaski County and the Lake Cumberland area . There ’ s plenty to do , plenty to see , and plenty of reasons to just relax and enjoy the comforts of home .
