The expansion will add 1000 metres of quay wall to the port and deepen its main channel and basin to 18 metres from the current 16 metres. The new quay wall will add an additional 600,000 square metre for cargo handling. APM Terminals Pier 400 Los Angeles raised the height of the first of ten ship-to-shore (STS) cranes to 33 feet (10 meters), making it the tallest port crane in North America and will be ready for vessel operations in the next few months. To create an even safer place to work, an additional feature of the upgraded cranes is the installation of Light Emitting Diode (LED) illumination, which will improve operator visibility and accuracy of the cranes’ Optical Character Recognition (OCR) programmes.
