Las Cruces, New Mexico

1st Lt. James Clayton Flowers of Las Cruces, New Mexico was a member of the famed African-American Tuskegee Airmen, flying "Red Tail" P-51 Mustangs in support of B-17 bombers in sorties over Germany. At first subjected to racial discrimination, these pilots in the 332 Fighter Group literally earned the undying respect for their skill and bravery, taking losses in fighting off German fighter planes while escorting the white bomber crews home safely.
