Clovis, New Mexico

Memorial Unveiling and Dedication Ceremony

Clovis, New Mexico honored two of their most valued citizens whom many have deemed deserving of praise for many years of service rendered. The impact Bishop Charles Green and Mother Ange Green have had on the Clovis community will last several lifetimes. A packed crowd at the Clovis/Carver Public Library was not nearly representative of the masses and the many lives that have been edified through the faithful service of Bishop Charles and Mother Ange Green.

Bishop Charles Green became the Pastor of the First Church of God in Christ, in 1957, and served as Pastor until his retirement. Mother Ange Green, served as an elementary school teacher in Clovis for over 27 years, and served as co-pastor, along with her husband, at the First Church of God in Christ.

Clovis Mayor David Lansford outlined an amazing list of community organizations that Bishop Green was associated with as he documented his community service. "That is a life of service, almost unmatched in his day," Lansford said. Mother Ange Green was celebrated for her career as a teacher and the positive impact she had on the lives of young women in the Clovis community.

Together the Greens were honored for their work with the First Church of God in Christ, as Clovis City Commissioner Sandra Taylor-Sawyer said they were the longest serving couple to head a church in Clovis.

At the end of the ceremony, a beautifully crafted bust featuring the likenesses of Pastor Charles and Sis. Ange Green was unveiled, which Taylor-Sawyer noted was paid for by private donations. According to Selmus Price, with the Clovis Cultural Ethnic Affairs Committee and long-time President of the Clovis N.A.A.C.P., planning continues, as he stated, “We are already organizing a scholarship for students that will be given in the name of our honorees.”

The Green children, Angela, Beverly, and Wendell, addressed the crowd and Beverly thanked everyone for their presence and shared a special thank you to the committee members who were responsible for the event. Beverley said, “This is my parents’ life work and it is still living. This is an actual living legacy.”
