Dear Raul Castro and Barack Obama,
On December 16, 2014, the Rebirth-Third Paradise symbol had been outlined on the sea off the coast of Cuba by the Cuban Rebirth Embassy and Galleria Continua, in collaboration with the artist Alexis Leiva “Kcho” and the fishermen of Havana. The next day the resumption of diplomatic relations between the Cuban government and the government of the United States of America was announced. This coincidence of events has made
clear the congruence between the symbol of Rebirth and the emergence of new geopolitical scenarios, affecting not just the two countries directly involved but the rest of the world too. On November 23, 2015, I was received by Raul Castro at the Palace of the Revolution? along with the artist Kcho. During a long conversation, the president declared himself to be fully in agreement with the import of the Rebirth-Third Paradise symbol, expressing the conviction that it could serve as a guide to the establishment of a new political balance, both locally and globally. A balance indispensable to overcoming the conflicts that divided the world with the Cold War and that are now reemerging in a new form all over the planet. Personally I believe that Cuba is symbolically and practically the place from which to start over.
From the following day until November 26, the 1st Rebirth Forum— Geographies of Transformation was held in Havana. On that occasion we showed that it is possible to set practices of responsible change in motion through art, reconciling the different and opposing positions that condition society and politics. The work method adopted permits the creation of bodies that are able to promote intercultural and interdisciplinary exchanges and dialogue and interaction between public and private structures. The method is that of Trinamics, developed by our organization, Cittadellarte Fondazione Pistoletto, to stimulate progress and peace in the world.
The theorem of Trinamics is represented by the triple circle: two opposing circles combine in the middle, giving rise to a third, distinct and completely new unit. It is the symbol of creation, of birth and rebirth, which takes place through the fortuitous or deliberate combination of two subjects, objects or concepts, like the positive and negative poles that produce electricity or like totalitarianism and anarchy, between which democracy has developed. We want to adopt this principle in the reformulation of political relations and in all areas of society: specifically we want to see it applied in the new phase of the
relationship between Cuba and the United States of America. We intend to set up practical workshops with the aim of creating a network of projects to promote change in society, in accordance with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations.
We are ready to work with your governmental organizations and offer our Rebirth Workshop, set up in Cuba after the Forum, as a means of sparking off activities aimed at achieving real results of balanced and responsible change.
