STRATOS KALAFATIS

Stratos Kalafatis is one of the most talented and appreciated photographers of the new generation in Greece, award-winning and with many major exhibitions in the course of the years. Born in Kavala in 1966, he now lives and works in Thessaloniki. He also teaches photography and organizes activities related to creative photography.

He has completed long-term photographic series such as Archetypal Images, Diary 1998-2002, Saga, Archipelago, Athos - The colors of faith. Catalogues published by Agra editions: Archetypal Images (1999), Omonia 2000 - Journey to the navel of Athens (with writer Philip Philippou - 2000), Diary 1998-2002 (with foreword by Christian Caujolle - 2004) and Athos - Colors of faith (2014). In 2006 he participated at the Venice Architeture Biennial representing Greece with “Floating Cities” a project on the Aegean Islands. Stratos Kalafatis has been chosen to represent Greece at the big photo exhibition Faces Now – European Portrait Photography from 1990 that is now touring Europe.

Athos - The colors of faith

The exhibition Athos- The colors of faith is a production of the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation (MIET), under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture. For the first time it was presented in autumn 2014 at the headquarters of the National Bank Foundation inThessaloniki, and later at the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Berlin. From February 19 to March 28, 2015 the exhibition was hosted at the headquarters of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank in Athens.

In Italy, the project has been sponsored by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture and curated by Afrodite Oikonomidou. The exhibition was initially presented in Turin, in the exhibition spaces of Palazzo Saluzzo Paesana, from September, 20 to October, 25 2015, in collaboration with Associazione Piemonte-Grecia Santorre di Santarosa and Torino Spiritualità festival. From 8 to 31 January 2016, the exhibition was presented in Trieste, hosted by the Greek Orthodox Community of Trieste. In Rome it had showed from 6 to 22 May 2016 at the Academy of Romania. After Italy, the exhibition will go to St. Petersburg and will be housed at the Museum Manege during the months of July and August, and from mid-September it will be staged in the Museum of Tallinn in Estonia.
