502nd Military Police Team Bus
The group that became the 502 Paintball team first attended D-Day in 2007. We camped in a tent. Those of you who attended that game will recall the Thursday night storm, to keep the story short, that storm shredded our tent. We decided then that we needed a camper, a heavy camper. This was the inspiration for our first bus.
Fast forward to 2013; we have another problem., our team outgrew the bus. We wanted to be able to use it for transportation to various paintball events in our area, not just camp in it at D-Day. We found a 1999 Thomas MVP, rated for 84 passengers, almost the biggest school bus made. It is a flat front, rear engine, Caterpillar powered model with air brakes and suspension, under-body storage, electronically controlled( read: cruise control) wonder that we picked up for not as much money as you’ d think.
Now for the transformation to a recreational vehicle, we( my sons and I, along with some help from the 502 team members) are doing all the work ourselves. Having done and re-done the interior of the old bus 3 times, we knew what we wanted and also what we didn’ t. The seats needed to be removed along with the exterior flashers and stop signs. The bunks, stove / oven, upper kitchen cabinets, and trailer hitch were all removed from the old bus for use in this one.
As of this writing, the interior is 90 % finished. The floor is carpeted as are the walls by the seats and beds. The stove is in, as are the lower kitchen cabinets. We found a pre-owned apartment sized refrigerator and it’ s installed as well( It will be great to have more freezer space). One wall is wired for 110 volt AC, the other will be done before we leave for D-Day. The bus will sleep 6 on beds and have 9 forward facing bus seats. We still need to finish the electric, install the overhead storage racks, build a couple more cabinets for laundry storage and finish the paintjob.
Feel free to come visit us wherever we set up camp, we will be glad to show it off. Todd“ Superdad” Stark
