Recognising new predators
That’s a question Macquarie University’s Alex Carthey (Biological Sciences) and her colleagues have been exploring in two recent
papers published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution and Scientific Reports respectively.
It’s a scenario that may be playing out in your own backyard.
“Many Sydney residents have bandicoots in their backyards,” says Alex. “Bandicoots recognise and avoid dogs - but not cats - when
choosing which yard they will go into.”
Alex and her colleagues found in the case of introduced predators - like dogs, cats, foxes and dingoes – they emit different odour
cues to more familiar predators like quolls and Tasmanian devils. This could explain why some prey don’t identify them as a threat.
