Year 7 Practical Skills for Inquiry Learning – Part 4 (continued)
Each group will need: Bubble Solution 1:
• A4 paper + pen The basic solution is:
• newspaper, paper towels, old towels, plastic
sheeting etc., …. to cope with the mess and for
cleaning up afterwards; • 1 part liquid detergent (the purest one you can
find).
• 2 parts water (distilled if possible).
• small ice cream container for bubble solution
when blowing bubbles;
Additives to include per 10 litres of solution: (these
make the solution last a very long time and also
make better bubbles!)
• Scissors and pliers.
For Questions 1, 2 (out on the front bench for them
to choose from sufficient for all groups)
• Glycerol 100 mL
• 1 kg sugar
• Wires, of 2 different thicknesses, if possible
• 2 cups of dissolved gelatine
• Pipe cleaners
Make mixture well in advance and keep covered but
not airtight.
• Wool (to wrap round wire)
• 500ml beakers containing bubble solution 1 but
labelled just as ‘bubble solution’
• Students may later request equipment, e.g. a
ruler, stopwatch – depending on the way they
define ‘best’
For Questions 3, 4 (out on a different part of front
bench – sufficient for all groups)
• Wires of 2 different thicknesses if possible
• Pipe cleaners
• Wool (to wrap round wire)
• A supply of
- bubble solutions A and B – each containing
differing quantities of water + soap solution;
- bubble solution C which is actually bubble
solution 1;
• Students may later request equipment, e.g. ruler,
stopwatch – (to determine biggest or longest
lasting); larger ice cream container?
