Types of Presentations
All proposals to present at a STASNSW event should feature a
successful practice, program, or key issue with a strong focus on
either:
a) science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
disciplines in general education,
b) cognitive and skill development or
c) the use of assessment and feedback
d) curriculum and pedagogy
Paper or panel abstracts are
invited under the following
overarching themes:
Cognitive & Skill Development:
There are many methods we can use to teach students how to
learn Science and to learn for life.
WORKSHOP SESSIONS
Workshop Sessions are traditional one-hour sessions that form
the core of conference offerings. Presenters are expected to use
active learning techniques to engage audiences. They may require
the use of a wet lab or computer room.
If you are interested in:
• neuroplasticity and the Growth Mindset
• character development - resilience, critical & creative thinking,
social awareness
problem solving
• Project Based Learning
ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS
Roundtable Discussions afford a personal and interactive setting
for exploration of key issues related to each conference track.
Roundtables are particularly well suited for exploratory topics and
topics that require small group interchange. Roundtable presenters
are expected to facilitate substantive discussions or small group
activities. Roundtable Discussions are aimed at audiences
of 10-12.
STEM/STEAM
Effective methods and techniques for integrating STEM fields
with humanities and research into the impact of interdisciplinary
approaches to STEM education.

SPOTLIGHT SESSIONS
Spotlight Session presentations take the form of a short (5 - 10
minute) presentation of a lesson/unit/skill or technique that you
use. These are delivered primarily through the use of graphs,
diagrams, pictures, data, and narrative text. During their assigned
time periods, participants informally discuss their presentations
with conference participants by making brief remarks, sharing
information, and answering questions about the presentation
topic. Presenters are encouraged to have handout materials
available for participants.
Assessment/Feedback
Principles of successful assessment and feedback form the
cornerstone of student progress. How can we ensure that learning
intentions are effectively communicated to elicit clear student
expectations?
