Stanford logs impressive non-conference mileage
Stanford spent the preseason crisscrossing the country, traveling to Colorado,
Connecticut and New York twice. In sum,
the Cardinal logged 14,591 miles in nonconference travel - a truly remarkable
number and a testament to Stanford’s
dedication to playing a challenging
preseason schedule.
A tough schedule only becomes worth it
in March if you win, and the Cardinal did.
The highlight was stunning No. 10/10
Connecticut, the Cardinal’s first road win
over a top-10 team in five years.
Stanford played three games in the
Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the first two
during the Progressive Legends Classic in
November. There, Stanford beat Houston
before falling to a tough Pittsburgh squad.
The Cardinal returned to Brooklyn again
in December after beating Connecticut for a
contest against Michigan as the headliner of
the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational.
Although the Cardinal came up just
s h o r t a g a i n s t M i c h i g a n , S t a n f o rd ’s
dedication to pursuing competition against
top opponents is paying off. Stanford has
shown poise and grit in notching some big
road wins during conference play, including
at No. 17/13 Oregon and Cal.
The long trips have also given the
Cardinal to participate in some fun team
activities in rare down time.
Stanford
attended a Broadway Show, a Brooklyn
Nets game and the 9/11 Memorial in New
York. The team was also treated to a tour
and lunch at ESPN headquarters in
Connecticut.
Radio broadcaster Scott
Reiss ’93, whose resume includes eight
years as an ESPN analyst, helped set up the
outing for the Cardinal players, who enjoyed
seeing their names and faces on screen in
preparation for the next day’s game against
Connecticut.
