“ Tomorrow is being made today, irrevocably in most cases.” Peter Drucker, 1909 – 2005, Austrian American management consultant, educator, author.
As I write, the world is in turmoil, with war, trade disruptions and political rhetoric creating a perfect storm of chaos and uncertainty. Energy prices are soaring, supply chains are disrupted, and I can only hope that by the time you read this, the situation has normalised at least a little.
It seems in bad taste to look for a silver lining in times of conflict and upheaval, but with this month’ s special focus being on sustainability, it’ s impossible to ignore the effect of today’ s geopolitical tensions on tomorrow’ s energy supply. DNV recently released its report‘ The likely effects of the Iran war on the global energy transition’, and its forecast model shows that when there is heightened focus on energy security, the pace of the global energy transition speeds up. That is because the net effect of energy security policies globally favours renewables, batteries, nuclear, and energy efficiency.
“ The rule-of-thumb that what is bad for fossils is good for renewables applies. And the Middle East conflict is definitely bad for oil and gas. It is clearly strengthening energy security as a primary global concern because it has once again exposed, dramatically, the vulnerability of many countries to oil and gas dependency.” You can read the full report on DNV. com.
And sustainability is progressing at a rapid pace in our industry. David Sear’ s feature on page 14 proclaims,“ It cannot be seen, heard or touched, but sustainability has become a widespread commodity across the entire stainless steel supply chain.” Innovation and market forces are driving efforts to decarbonise our entire industry.
Further in the issue, we look at how additive manufacturing is achieving circularity in the development of superalloy powders. The Europe-funded GEAR-UP project is promoting circular manufacturing with recycled materials by combining additive manufacturing with AI-driven design and lifecycle assessment. Port of Rotterdam has a bold plan to be
CO 2 neutral by 2050, and stainless steels are playing a key role in that ambition.
We welcome EBK to our cover this month, and it was fascinating to learn how the company has evolved under Jiuli High Tech Metals’ ownership since 2023. Central to this evolution is the development of its patented RollClad ® technology, which delivers mechanical bond strengths approaching those of metallurgical cladding while maintaining the economic advantages of MLP systems. Read about that from page 8.
I hope that you enjoy this issue and that the coming weeks will see the world return to a more peaceful, productive and profitable state for all our readers.
Best wishes, Joanne McIntyre Editor-in-Chief of Stainless Steel World j. mcintyre @ kci-world. com
