This month , the Stainless Steel World team has focused on sustainability and collected a selection of articles on this important trend in our industry . During the Sustainability Day at last year ’ s Stainless Steel World Conference , there was intense interest in developments in this field , proving that the research and development of ‘ green steel ’ is an important and permanent topic for the entire supply chain .
In his feature article , James Chater looks at various aspects of how to achieve better sustainability in the production of stainless steel , which on average generates seven times its weight in CO2 emissions . From raw materials to manufacturing , fabrication and recycling , innovations in technology are greening steel at a rapid pace – at least in some parts of the world .
What does the drive to sustainability mean for end users , where the financial cost is usually the defining factor in material specification decisions ? In his article ‘ Sustainability becomes a driver for chemical plant construction ,’ Armin Scheuermann explains that increasing demand for chemical products and the pressure to achieve climate neutrality is bringing enormous challenges , but huge opportunties as well . Countries aiming for ‘ net zero ’ greenhouse gas emissions face huge investments ; in Europe alone , the chemical industry will have to invest EUR 1 trillion to achieve this , while in the US and China , investments will be even higher . Construction will play a key role in scaling up new technologies to large-scale production in the shortest possible time .
Looking at raw materials , you ’ ll be interested in reading the short feature on a project to extract iron from red mud , a toxic by-product from the aluminium industry . Recycling plays a key role in reducing the footprint of raw materials ; Picvisa has explained advances in metal waste recycling that offer solutions , and Swiss Steel has invested in a scrap partnership to help produce its own greener stainless steel .
The use of stainless steel helps to decarbonize many industries . Our two case studies , one from BUTTING about innovations in fusion energy and one from Outokumpu showing the use of Circle Green in home appliances , are good examples of this .
I was pleased to visit Krogamn Metals to interview Furkan Beltek about this Dutch supplier ’ s activities and ambitions for this month ’ s cover story . From their warehouse in Rotterdam , he outlined the company ’ s ambitious plans to evolve into one of Europe ’ s premier flat products suppliers and the rapid global expansion the company is undergoing .
