A sector par excellence
“ We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit,” Will Durant, 1885 – 1981, American historian and philosopher
This month, our special focus is on the tubes, pipes and fittings sector, which, as our feature article describes, is“ a value-added sector par excellence”. As a field of expertise that takes a primary product and turns it into something of greater value, the sector is performing strongly, largely thanks to several fast-growing, rapidly changing or comparatively new industries. Energy transition applications are a great example, as power sources ranging from nuclear to hydrogen require high-precision tubes, pipes, and fittings capable of withstanding harsh environments. A polar opposite to these applications is the magnificent King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture, also known as Ithra, which has been constructed in the barren desert of Dhahran in Saudi Arabia. This incredible structure has been clad in thousands of duplex tubes. Over 350km of duplex tubing wraps the unique structures of the centre in organic curves, protecting it from the elements while providing shade and an astonishing architectural appearance. The distance between every single tube is exactly 9.9mm, a degree of accuracy which is hard to even imagine over such a large structure. I know you will enjoy this article, which appears on page 37. This month, I’ m delighted to welcome Pro-Roll to the magazine cover for the first time. This UK manufacturer specialises in small batches of high-end alloys for applications as diverse as submarines to motorsport. As a complete mini-mill, they produce small batches to order, an ability which puts them at the cutting edge of new alloy development – larger mills utilise their expertise to produce small batches of new grades as they are developed. At the same time, they also produce legacy alloys which are no longer manufactured for specialist equipment with specifications dating back decades. Don’ t forget to check out the information on two of our stainless events this year. I’ ve included the full conference program for Duplex World which takes place 6 & 7 May in Rotterdam. You’ ll also find the Call for Papers for Stainless Steel World Americas … we’ re coming to Houston! This marks the first time in many years that we’ ve hosted our flagship event in the US, and we couldn’ t be more excited. Submit your abstract and join the conversation! I hope you enjoy this issue, and as always, your feedback is welcome.
Best wishes, Joanne McIntyre Editor-in-Chief of Stainless Steel World j. mcintyre @ kci-world. com
