100 th anniversary of Type-B nickel-base ( Ni-Mo ) alloys Prior to the introduction of the workhorse C-family of nickel-base alloys ( Ni-Cr-Mo ) in the early 1930s , work had been conducted on nickelmolybdenum alloy compositions . This resulted in the award of a patent in 1921 for a nickelmolybdenum alloy composition range , which ultimately led to the introduction of Alloy B ( Ni-Mo ) in 1923 with a nickel content of 60 % and nearly 30 % molybdenum .

Spanning the decades : how stainless steel became the material of choice for modern bridges Of all the materials used for bridges over the centuries , stainless steel will likely prove the most effective and durable . Europe led the way in using duplex grades and some austenitics . In the USA , a ferritic-martensitic dual-phase grade has found favour , but duplex grades are being assessed and more frequently applied .
